Website Optimization via A/B Testing

Updated: Dec 27, 2022

A/B Testing, also known as Split Testing, is a method of comparing two versions of a web page to see which one performs better. By running a test on a live site with real users, businesses can make informed decisions about which version of a page is more effective at achieving their desired goals.

How does it work? A sample of users is divided into two groups, A and B. Group A is shown the control, which is the current version of the website, while group B is shown the variant, which is the new version of the website. The goal of split testing is to see if the variant produces better results than the control.

A/B testing can be a valuable tool for optimizing your website. By carefully planning and conducting tests, you can make data-driven decisions that will significantly improve your website's performance.

There are a few different ways to split test a website. The most common method is to use a tool like Google Optimize or a platform such as Optimizely to create two separate versions of the website. The first version is the original, or control, while the second is the variant. Once the two versions are created, users are randomly assigned to each group. The goal is to see if the variant produces better results than the control.

A/B testing can be used to test anything on a website, from the color of a button to the placement of a banner ad. In general, anything that can be changed on a website can be split tested.

There are a few things to keep in mind when running an A/B test on a web page:

  1. Set a clear goal for the test. What are you trying to achieve? Are you trying to reduce bounce rate, improve engagement with your site, increase registrations, or drive conversions (e.g. transactions)?

  2. Make sure both versions of the page are identical except for the change you're testing.

  3. Test one change at a time. Don't try to test multiple changes at once.

  4. Make sure that the sample size is large enough to be significant. Collect enough data to make a statistical analysis. This typically means running the test for at least a week, or potentially much longer if your site traffic isn't significant.

  5. Analyze the results to see which version performed better.

  6. Finally, be prepared to make changes based on the results data.

Split testing is a valuable tool for website owners. It allows them to make changes to their website based on data, rather than guessing. By A/B testing, website owners can be sure that the changes they are making are actually improvements, and not just changes for the sake of change.
